Walnut, botanical name: Juglans.
From France or North America, this wood is appreciated in the manufacture of furniture, in decoration, luxury car dashboards, guitars luthiery and old radios stations.
Its grey colour in its raw state turns into a more or less dark brown once varnished or oiled.
With the patina of time, its brown colour will turn into orange honey. If you wish to get this orange honey colour, you may choose a blonde walnut with a light tinted finish.
Several specialities are particularly requested such as its swirl (root part of the trunk offering a very turbulent veining) or its burl (outgrowth formed by hundreds of small pin-knots).
Genuine wood sliced veneer sheets.
These veneers are raw without a finish or any fleece back.
The veneer surface is similar to plane wood, however, it will be preferable to forecast a light sanding after glueing.
The veneers are offered here as wood sliced sheets of one and unique thickness.
Both faces of these veneers are the same, without fleece back, without glue.
Even if the veneer's sides had been cut relatively straight, it isn't a precise parallel clipping, some veneers may have kept the decreasing shape of the tree, wider at the bottom end and narrower at the top end.
Very occasionally, some veneers sides have traces unclipped wane but our veneers are measured at the narrowest as explained in the paragraph "sizes".
As a genuine natural wood, all finishing products are acceptable as long these products are meant to be for wood usage.
The choice of finish product has to be consistent with the realisation final usage.
Burls or Swirls are made up of small knots which gives it its special character, it also means that some of these knots are piercing and open slits are considered to be part of this type of wood.
After glueing, you can fill in the small holes with wood paste to obtain a complete filling, or before glueing cut the larger holes with a cookie cutter and place a veneer washer of the same size taken from a scrap.
By nature burls and swirls are with a lot of counter grain and therefore its veneer is often buckled, even when it has been pressed it may still be slightly buckled.
In order not to split the wood during pressing, it will be recommended to moisten it before glueing (the more the wood will be wet the more it will become flexible and flat).
Once wet, you can press it by drying it (make a rotation with a paper towel that will absorb the humidity) or use a polyurethane type glue (often sold as exterior wood glue in DIY stores) which will stick harder if the wood is damp, it will then be necessary to press with a backing plate, weights and clamps.
Veneers are rolled and well protected in a strong carton chosen for resisting somewhat vigorous handling and being delivered to you in good condition.
Sold by the sheet, decreasing prices upon quantity.
