Botanic name: Acer Pseudoplatanus.
The Sycamore maple is the European maple; it is a hardwood so-called "white," but slightly ivory.
This forest species is valuable hardwood, especially in its fiddled form.
Used in cabinetmaking and decoration, it is best known for violin making, especially for its fiddled peculiarity.
Remarkable aestheticism and a much sought-after tone for violins and cellos.
Fiddled Sycamore is a rare and precious wood.
Like all burls and swirls, filling up some tiny black knots open with wood paste or using the cookie-cutter technique for larger knots is necessary.
Genuine wood sliced veneer sheets.
These veneers are raw without a finish or any fleece back.
The veneer surface is similar to plane wood; however, it will be preferable to forecast a light sanding after gluing.
The veneers are offered here as wood sliced sheets of one and unique thickness.
Both faces of these veneers are the same, without fleece back, without glue.
Even if the veneer's sides had been cut relatively straight, it isn't a precise parallel clipping, and some veneers may have kept the decreasing shape of the tree, wider at the bottom end and narrower at the top end.
Very occasionally, some veneers' sides have traces unclipped wane, but our veneers are measured at the narrowest as explained in the paragraph "sizes."
As genuine natural wood, all finishing products are acceptable as long as these products are meant to be for wood usage.
The choice of finish product has to be consistent with the realization of final usage.
Burls or Swirls are made up of small knots, which gives it its special character; it also means that some of these knots are piercing, and open slits are considered part of this type of wood.
After gluing, you can fill in the small holes with wood paste to obtain a complete filling, or before gluing, cut the larger holes with a cookie cutter and place a veneer washer of the same size taken from a scrap.
By nature, burls and swirls are with a lot of counter grain, and therefore its veneer is often buckled; even when it has been pressed, it may still be slightly buckled.
To not split the wood during pressing, it will be recommended to moisten it before gluing (the more the wood will be wet, the more it will become flexible and flat).
Once wet, you can press it by drying it (make a rotation with a paper towel that will absorb the humidity) or use a polyurethane type glue (often sold as exterior wood glue in DIY stores) which will stick harder if the wood is damp, it will then be necessary to press with a backing plate, weights and clamps.
Veneers are rolled and well protected in a strong carton chosen to resist somewhat vigorous handling and delivered to you in good condition.
It is sold by the sheet, decreasing prices upon quantity.
